The Unlikely Disciple is a book that I found to be more encouraging, humbling, and enlightening than any Christian book I've read in the last year. Kevin Roose accomplished a well-rounded assessment of the Fundamentalist Christian world while at the same time bringing a human element to figures and groups that most Evangelical Christians enjoy disliking. A self-proclaimed non-believer, Roose decided to take a semester off from his Ivy League School (Brown University) to attend Liberty University, a fundamentalist Evangelical school founded by outspoken Christian leader Jerry Falwell. Roose's journey into the life of the conservative Christian world is humorous, saddening, and hopeful all at the same time. He encounters Christians in every form, hateful, hyper-spiritual, balanced, and skeptical all the while maintaining a surprisingly well balanced opinion of those in this world that is so foreign to him. Although he disagrees with some of the core tenets of these people he portrays them with respect, care and compassion that hopefully will help Christians and Non-Christians alike to enter into healthier dialogues and stronger relationships with each other.
